Looking Forward to New Adventure
Student decides on Nilai U’s American Degree Transfer Program after positive experience in studying English.
“I had three months free after completing my SPM and my mum didn’t want me to sit around doing nothing, so she enrolled me in the Intensive English Programme at Nilai University (Nilai U),” explains Nur Dalila Asmadi, who hails from Bangi, Selangor. “My mum decided that it was ideal as it would help me improve my English and the campus is near my home.” It was while doing the Intensive English Program that Dalila found out about Nilai U’s American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP)
“To be honest, I had not given much thought about what I wanted to do after Form V,” admits the former student Kuala Klawang Technic School, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan. “Good thing my mum pushed me into an environment that forced me to seriously consider my options.” What caught her attention was the sheer number of choices available under this programme. “The choices are also very varied. Students can choose a mixture of science and arts subjects. Here at Nilai U, I am able to choose subjects such as Introduction to Music, Chemistry, and even Introduction to Golf!” This bodes well for school leavers who have yet to decide on their majors. Unlike other degree programmes where students will need to decide on their core field after completing their pre-university / Foundation programme, those in the ADTP can defer making the choice until they apply to an American university. Essentially, students will only need to make this all-important decision when they are about to enter the third year of their degree programme. This is a great benefit given that many students will have a clearer picture of their career path after sampling higher education first hand. “Too often, students are asked to make a choice when they are uncertain of where their interest lie or have no real idea what a certain career entails,” says Dalila. Students in Nilai U’s ADTP can transfer up to 90 credits to the American university of their choice.
The 20-year-old herself has only just made up her mind to pursue a Corporate Communications degree either at Central Oklahoma University or Western Michigan University. “To be very honest, I was very unsure what I wanted to study. With the help of my lecturers, I have decided to do corporate communications. They highlighted my strengths and told me this would be an ideal degree for me. Having done some research, I agree with their advice and am now totally stoked to be going to an American university to do this,” says Dalila.
Besides offering large choice of subjects for students, Nilai U’s also offers the opportunity to make huge savings. At a time when currency exchange rates have contributed towards making overseas education even more costly, ADTP allows for the study period to be split between Malaysia and USA. “The cost factor is definitely very important. Being able to do two years here allows for huge savings,” she exclaims. “This factor alone makes the ADTP worth considering. The monies saved can help with my living expenses later on ir even maybe fund my Master’s degree,” she says hopefully.
Dalila is also very keen to point out that the lecturers at Nilai U are extremely helpful and always happy to provide guidance. “We are like a close knit family here in the ADTP. The lecturers know us all very well and thus know how to get the best out of each of us. You cannot underestimate the importance of having such guidance,” she underlines. “I value their expertise and supervision because this may be the last time I am afforded such tutelage.”
Nilai U was established in 1997 and is located just 15 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and 35 minutes from Kuala Lumpur City Centre. For more information, please go to or call 06-8502308 / 07-2262336.
