Candidates pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) In Applied Sciences must develop an independent thinking approach and a unique expertise in their own research interest. Independent research requires diligent and thorough investigation into a topic with the aim of formulating new and original ideas, findings and theories.

Duration of Study

Part time 5 - 7 years 
Full time 3 - 5 years

Entry Requirements
i. A Master's degree in the related field that is accepted by the Nilai University Senate; OR
ii. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree that are accepted by the Nilai University Senate.
Applicants are required to submit a research proposal which should comprise the following elements:
  • Field of research
  • Topic of research proposal
  • Statement of the research problem
  • Objectives of the research
  • Background or a brief literature review on the research topic
  • Methodology - explain the methods used in study such as library research, lab work, field work, etc.
  • Work schedule / Timeline / Gantt chart
  • References (at least TWO (2) core references)
  • Full name of proposed Supervisor (where applicable).
  • Full names, Tel. and Email contacts of TWO (2) Referees.
  • The research proposal should contain between 1,500 and 2,000 words or about FOUR (4) pages.

Phase I – Prerequisite Coursework 
EB5001 Research Methodology (3 credits) and EB5002 Statistics (3 credits)
(Only for students who do not have sufficient knowledge or background on research methodology and statistics)
Phase II - Comprehensive Examination
All PhD students are required to take a comprehensive examination in their respective areas of study. Only on passing of the comprehensive examination will students be allowed to commence on their research. Each student is only allowed two attempts to pass his/her comprehensive examination.
Phase III - Proposal Defence
Each student must publicly present and defend his/her research proposals.
The student is only allowed to continue with his/her research to Phase IV on passing of the defence of his/her proposal.
Phase IV - Thesis Preparation
The student proceeds to his/her data collection, data analysis and report writing.
Phase V - Viva Voce
After completion and submission of the thesis, the student is required to attend a Viva Voce to orally defend his/her thesis.
