A student interested in the field of hospitality must be a people person and understand the value of teamwork. A passion for food and travel would be an asset but being achievement-oriented and able to develop technical skills and knowledge would be necessary.

The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism is particularly fortunate to enjoy a close working relationship with Nilai Springs Resort Hotel and Nilai Springs Golf Club, sister companies with the Nilai Resources corporate group.

In the field of hospitality and tourism, students need to be familiar with the nature of the industry, which is service-oriented and customer-focused.  What better way to do this than to have a real-life work environment within reach of the University to train in.

Our students have found their experience at Nilai Springs Resort Hotel an enlightening and rewarding experience, with hotel and golf club staff ever willing to guide them and are even willing to trust them with responsibilities as with permanent staff.  Students, to-date, have had their on-site training and internship done for housekeeping, front office, food preparation and even in sales and marketing and in the public area.

It is with this interactive affiliation that five key personnel from Nilai Springs Resort Hotel were invited to be designated as adjunct staff of the Faculty.  With their vast years of working experience in their respective roles, students under their tutelage will derive not only the expected job skills, but along with sound principles and work ethics that come with the territory.

In the long run, the Faculty hopes to install key elements that would make up the gap between hospitality education and hospitality industry demands, including more competency-based learning, an improved system of assessment of student performance and achievements, a learning culture which embraces operational management and people innovation and a curriculum that relates professional life and industry experience to learning via professional and technical development, an introduction of industry perspectives into existing courses and the awareness of industry trends and opportunities.
